April 5/2011
In keeping with the Ministry of Education and Near North District School Board’s Safe Schools Act, West Ferris Secondary School will be holding a mock lockdown this week. In preparation for this event, we have partnered with the North Bay City Police to provide training to staff and have held an assembly with the student body to review our expectations. In addition, we have reviewed the protocol with our School Advisory Council and you will receive a voice mail message tonight indicating our procedure.
As the lockdown scenario unfolds, police actors will enter the school as intruders. The school will be placed into lockdown and the North Bay Police Emergency Response Team will arrive and quickly get the situation under control. Afterwards, there will be a debriefing meeting with our administration and staff with the aim of improving our actions and being prepared for such an event
If you have any questions or concerns about this endeavour, please contact Sean Ruddy ruddys@nearnorthschools.ca

Each week had a different focus: Used clothing, toiletries, household items, winter clothing and children's toys. "This year's response has been amazing" said Zahra Merali, the event's student organizer. "We filled three trucks and three cars absolutely full of stuff. November 16, 2010 Food Drive
The Fall Food Drive was held on Tuesday night and it was an amazing success. We had in excess of 135 volunteers: students and adults who joined together to help.
WFSS collected over 7,000 poinds of food. The North Bay Food Bank tells us that we are the number one contributor in this year's drive. We exceeded the collections of every other school. In fact, the contributions for WF alone are roughly equal to those of all the other schools put together for this event. Than's something to celebrate and shows our true Trojan community spirit and pride.
A huge shout-out and thank you goes to every last person who helped in some way for this event. To all students, drivers, parent volunteers and of course our WF staff...thank you so much on behalf of the North Bay community. To Mr. Vincent's class for their enthusiastic support and energy, from distributing advance notices, to collecting food, to helping at the Food Bank to unload..we're so proud of you! To the parents who provided their time and vehicles to drive volunteers. To the WF staff who got behind the effort and supported students with their encoureagment and time. To all those people who helped in every stage of the event, in so many different capacities, it is this kind of spirit and collective caring that makes good things happen for our community. We didn't have much time to organize this event, but it turned into a tremendous success because of our common desire to help. Thank you everyone!

11/02/2010 - Near North Student Selected to Play in Ontario Honour Band
Near North District School Board student, Dan Turner, is one of fifty Ontario students who have been selected to play in the Ontarion Honour Band. Dan, currently in Grade 11 at West Ferris Secondary School, is one of two Tuba players who have been chosen.
Fifty of the province's most talented high school musicians will take part in an intensive week of music making. The annual ensemble gives the participants the opportunity to work with world-renowned conductors throughout the week-long event. Rehearsals begin today in Oakville, Ontario and will conclude with a final performance at the Ontario Music Educators Association Conference in London, Ontario on November 6th.
Before he left for Oakville, Dan Turner said "I'm looking forward to working with a new band and pulling off six hard pieces in three days."
Dan is a member of the West Ferris Secondary School Concert Band, the 22 Wing Band and the North Bay Symphony Orchestra. When not practicing his tuba, Dan also plays drums, bass, guitar and sings. He is currently working on recording and releasing a fully independent demo CD.
