Workshop #1  4:00-5:30 p.m.

Presenters:  Matthew Whitehead, Alliance P.S.

Heather Gardiner, Interlink Choir Director, Retired Teacher

Audience:  Junior

Musical experiences will be accessible to every workshop participant regardless of background.  Practical vocal and instrumental activities, suggested resources and attention to procedures to draw both children and teachers into meaningful and happy connections with music will be shared.

Presenter: Perry McLeod-Shabogesic, Aandzooked: Story Teller & Artists

Audience: J/I

The Medicine Wheel represents and unites various aspects of the world, both seen and unseen. It emphasizes how all life and aspects of the world are related and connected through balance and respect. Through these teachings, artistic elements and principals of design are used to develop the art of storytelling and craft through the creation of a personal medicine wheel.

Presenter: Andrea Lefebvre, Chippewa S.S. Dance Teacher

Audience: All levels and abilities (P/J/I)

Dance is a great creative outlet and motivator for students, regardless of their age, grade or ability. Sometimes, dance programming and curriculum expectations are limited due to the lack of physical space available in classrooms. This Site Specific workshop will examine dance and choreography in a variety of physical spaces around the school. The workshop is designed to provide educators with a no/low cost lesson option, assessment strategies and other tools for immediate use in the classroom. Participants will also review the CODE and artsalive.ca websites.

Presenter: Liz Ashworth, Visual Arts Professor, Schulich School of Education

Audience: P/J/I

Scrapbooking is a popular craft but many don’t think of it as an excellent way to teach, and reinforce, the elements and principles of design.  Each participant will have the opportunity to not only see examples of scrapbooks created by teachers and students but also create a page of his/her own as a sample for his/her classroom.

Presenter: Kim Eyre, Nipissing University

Audience: P/J/I

Adding music, drama, dance and visual art will enrich the experience of sharing a children’s story or folk tale. In this session, Kim will share ideas, strategies and suggestions for creating an integrated arts event in the primary/junior grades and we will work through one example together. Come ready to join in the fun and sharing! (It would be helpful if a few people brought a soprano recorder.)

5:30-6:30 p.m.  Exhibitors’ Display and Supper to the Sounds of the Interlink Choir
