SEAC's Role and Responsibility in Special Education:
- SEAC makes recommendations to the board with respect to any matter affecting the establishment, development and delivery of special education programs and services for exceptional pupils of the board
- SEAC participates in the board's annual review of its Special Education Plan (SEP)
- SEAC participates in the board's annual budget process as it relates to special education
- SEAC reviews the financial statements of the board as they relate to special education
- SEAC provides information to parents, as requested
An exceptional pupil is defined as:
A pupil whose behavioural, communicational, intellectual, physical or multiple exceptionalities are such that he or she is considered to need placement in a special education program by an Identification, Placement, Review Committee (IPRC).
A special education program is defined as:
In respect of an exceptional pupil, an educational program that is based on and modified by the results of continuous assessment and evaluation and that includes an Individual Education Plan (IEP) containing specific objectives and an outline of educational services that meets the need of the exceptional pupil.
Special education services are defined as:
Facilities and resources, including support personnel and equipment, necessary for developing and implementing a special education program.
